Where Probate Starts in Jefferson County

What Our Probate Services Cover

August & Suchowski provides full probate services across Jefferson County, Colorado. The first question is always whether probate is required at all. Some estates need it and some don't.

That depends on what the person owned and how it was titled. Property with a named beneficiary passes outside probate entirely. What's left determines the track, and we walk through both before recommending anything. For estates with real property in other states or a family business, our large estate probate page covers how those get handled.

Not Sure If You Even Need Probate?

Most people who call our Jefferson County probate attorney team aren't sure what they're dealing with. Someone died, there's a will or there isn't, and a bank or a title company just asked for something they've never heard of.

The questions sound like this. "Do I have to do anything at all?" "Is this simple or is it going to be a nightmare?" We answer both on the first call, for free. Start with a free consultation.

Why Families Start With Us

Elizabeth August leads probate at August & Suchowski and ran the probate practice group at a Lakewood firm before co-founding this one. She's seen enough Jefferson County estates to tell you within one conversation what yours will take. That call costs nothing.

Both attorneys are licensed in Colorado. Probate and estate planning are the only things this firm does, so nobody here is guessing at procedure between other kinds of cases.

Call Before You File Anything

Our Wheat Ridge office replies to new inquiries within one business day. The first consultation is free, and we discuss fees on that call. We bill hourly or at a flat fee depending on what the estate needs, and we tell you which before you commit.

Call before you sign or submit anything. Undoing a filing made the wrong way costs more than getting it right the first time. That's the most common reason people end up paying twice.

Probate Services Across Jefferson County

Our Wheat Ridge office covers probate throughout Jefferson County, within a radius of about ten miles. That takes in Lakewood, Arvada, Golden, Westminster, and Edgewater.

Jefferson County cases are filed at the Combined Courts in Golden. Once we know where the person lived and what they owned, we can tell you which court, which track, and roughly how long. If the estate looks straightforward, our informal probate page explains that route. If you've already been appointed, start with probate administration instead.

FAQs

How do I know if I need probate at all?

It depends on what the person owned and how it was titled in Colorado. Accounts with a named beneficiary, jointly held property, and assets already in a trust usually pass outside probate. Our Jefferson County team can tell you on a free call which of your assets fall where.

What should I bring to the first call?

Nothing is required. If you have the will, a death certificate, or a letter from a bank or the court, keep them nearby so we can be more specific. Most people call us with none of that and still leave the conversation knowing their next step.

Where does probate get filed in Colorado?

Probate is filed in the county where the person lived, not where their family lives or where the attorney's office is. For Jefferson County residents, that's the Combined Courts in Golden. If they lived in Denver, the case goes to a different court, and we'll tell you which.

Is there a probate option that's faster?

Colorado has more than one track, and the simpler one applies when there's a valid will or a clear line of heirs and nobody is disputing it. Which track fits depends on the estate. We'll tell you on the first call rather than after you've paid for anything.

What if I've already started and got stuck?

Plenty of people reach us partway in, after a filing got rejected or a deadline slipped. That's a normal starting point, not a problem. We'll look at where the case stands and tell you what it takes to get it current.
